FAQs About Tattoo Removal

Tattoos are meant to pretty much last forever. That said, you may someday want to have a tattoo removed. What made sense in the past may no longer make sense for your future. Fortunately, it’s possible to remove tattoos. If you're interested in tattoo removal and live in or near McCall or Nampa, ID, contact Comprehensive Dermatology of Idaho and Ryan S. Owsley, MD right away.

Can Tattoos Really Be Removed?

Yes! Tattoo removal need not be partial. Advances in laser technology and other methods have made it increasingly possible to completely remove tattoos. While results may vary from person to person, complete tattoo removal is a realistic option for many.

That said, you may have to go to multiple tattoo removal sessions to completely remove the mark. With lasers, it typically takes between 8 to 16 sessions to remove the tattoo.

What Are The Different Methods of Tattoo Removal?

These days, laser removal is probably the most common type of tattoo removal. Lasers are safe and effective and produce minimal discomfort and pain. It’s also possible to remove tattoos through surgery and “dermabrasion,” but many patients prefer laser removal.

Will Laser Tattoo Removal Produce Scarring?

In the past, lasers often removed not just the ink from the tattoo but also pigment from the skin, thus leaving a mark or scar behind. However, laser technology has advanced rapidly and it’s now possible to remove tattoos without leaving marks. Results will vary from circumstance to circumstance, and it’s possible that the original tattoo procedure resulted in scarring.

Want to learn more about scarring and tattoo removal and live near McCall or Nampa, ID? Ryan S. Owsley, MD at Comprehensive Dermatology of Idaho can provide advice.

How Painful Is Tattoo Removal?

Remember how painful it was when you got the tattoo? Laser removal often feels similar. There will often be some discomfort but the pain typically isn’t severe and will go away relatively quickly.

If you opt for more evasive procedures, such as dermabrasion, it may result in more pain. That said, it’s also possible to use anesthesia and numbing creams to reduce or even eliminate any associated pain.

What Side Effects Are Associated With Laser Removal?

Generally speaking, the side effects resulting from laser removal are mild. You may experience some redness and mild swelling at the site of the removed tattoo. The pain is typically similar to a minor sunburn. It’s also possible that you’ll suffer a bit of bruising. Typically, however, the bruising and soreness clear up quickly.

Is Tattoo Removal Right For Me?

Each individual is different and it’s important that you closely consider your situation. It’s also smart to speak with a dermatologist about your tattoo, situation, removal, and the outcomes you’re looking for.
