Treating Excessive Sweating

Tired of dealing with excessive sweating? Ryan S. Owsley, MD, at Comprehensive Dermatology of Idaho of McCall, Nampa, and Treasure Valley, ID, offers personalized treatment through a variety of techniques.

Treating Excessive Sweating

Sweating is a normal part of life and the body’s natural way of regulating its temperature. It’s necessary for our health. However, when it becomes excessive – a condition known as hyperhidrosis – it can be frustrating and embarrassing. However, there is help. Below, Dr. Owsley and the team at Comprehensive Dermatology of Idaho of McCall, Nampa, and Treasure Valley, ID, share some reasons you might be experiencing excessive sweating as well as how it can be treated.

What Is Considered “Excessive?”

You know that if you work out, you’re likely to sweat. Anxiety-inducing events, such as taking tests or public speaking, can also cause you to sweat. However, if you’ve noticed that you are sweating even if these activities aren’t occurring or you’re having to change sweaty shirts several times each day, it can be considered excessive. Additionally, if you notice that you have a lot of skin infections, including athlete’s foot, it could be due to excessive sweating.

What Causes Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis can be caused by several things. In some cases, it’s a health condition, such as diabetes or hyperthyroidism. In other cases, being overweight or obese plays a role. Certain medications and even trauma to the head can be to blame.

How Is It Treated?

The first step in treatment is determining the underlying cause, as treating it can typically take care of the issue. For example, if your condition is caused by taking medication, changing that medication might eliminate the sweating.

In addition to determining and treating the cause, your dermatologist can provide various other methods of treatment. As deodorants offered at your local retailer are not strong enough for this condition, stronger options can be prescribed to you.

MiraDry is another option. This is a technique in which thermal energy is used to eliminate sweat and odor glands, which prevent you from sweating in the first place. It is available for the underarms.

Other potential solutions include anticholinergic medication, electrical therapy, Botox, and surgery when other methods do not provide the desired relief. Your dermatologist will work with you to determine the best course of action for your needs.
