What Is the Process of Tattoo Removal?

Find out what to expect from our laser tattoo removal system.

While tattoos are just one way to express who we are and our style, not everyone feels that way. One study found that about one in six people hate their tattoos enough to want them removed. The good news is that removing tattoos is easier today than ever before and doesn’t require invasive surgical procedures to do it. Here’s what you should know about getting laser tattoo removal from our Nampa and McCall, ID, dermatologist Ryan S. Owsley, MD at Comprehensive Dermatology of Idaho.

Is laser tattoo removal right for me?

If you wish to part ways with your tattoo then laser tattoo removal could be ideal for you. There are various laser techniques and wavelengths that we can customize to our patient's needs, depending on the tattoo. While laser tattoo removal may have been better for certain tattoo colors or skin types in the past, laser technology has improved by leaps and bounds, which means that our Nampa and McCall, ID, dermatologist Ryan S. Owsley, MD and his team can effectively remove all tattoos and treat all skin types. To find out if laser tattoo removal is right for you, all you have to do is come in for a simple evaluation with our dermatological team.

What should I expect from this treatment?

The number of treatment sessions will depend on the color and size of the tattoo you are having removed. The shortest treatment time is about two to four sessions; while others may need up to 10 sessions to fully remove the tattoo. We require a consultation with all of our patients so we can examine your tattoo and map out your treatment plan.

We will first test the laser on your skin to see how your body reacts to it (this will also help us determine the most effective way to remove your tattoo). Then we will guide the handheld laser over your tattoo. Patients often liken the feeling of the laser to a rubber band snapping on their skin. The procedure isn’t always comfortable but it’s certainly tolerable.

An ice pack will be placed over the treated area to reduce swelling and then the area will be bandaged to keep it protected from the elements. After each treatment, you should notice your tattoo becoming less visible.
