Tired of having to pluck, wax, and shave every few days? Dealing with thick, dark and unsightly hair in visible areas such as the chin or shoulders? If so, a dermatologist can provide you with a more effective solution for getting rid of unwanted body hair faster and easier. The answer lies in laser hair removal.
Plucking and waxing can be painful and shaving can leave you with ingrown hairs and irritation. None of these methods are fun. Plus, you have to keep doing it every few days or every week if you want smooth skin. Why go through the hassle when a dermatologist can help you get rid of hair without ever having to lift a finger?
It doesn’t come as much of a surprise that laser hair removal is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments. This procedure makes it easy to get smoother skin without having to deal with tweezing, shaving, or waxing. This non-invasive laser treatment can treat just about any part of the body; however, it’s most often used to treat the,
- Upper lip and chin
- Bikini line
Thanks to advanced laser technology, our dermatologist can provide patients with a safe, effective, and comfortable laser treatment to help them target and remove unwanted hair for the long term. Most laser systems offer a built-in cooling system to make treatment as comfortable as possible. Depending on the size of the treatment area, laser hair removal can take as little as 10 minutes for regions such as the upper lip or chin and as long as one hour (for a full back).
Since hair grows in cycles, you will need to get several laser hair removal sessions to ensure that our dermatologist removes as much of the hair as possible. The average person will get anywhere from 4-6 sessions. During laser hair removal, the handheld device will be directed over the skin to target and heat up the hair follicles to destroy them, preventing them from growing back. While laser hair removal will not permanently get rid of the hair, it will help the hair grow back fewer, finer, and lighter so they are far less visible.
If you think laser hair removal could help you feel more confident in your appearance, then your cosmetic dermatologist can give you the smoother results you want before summer hits.
If you find yourself constantly brushing off white flakes of skin from your shirt collars and shoulders, then you may have a common skin condition known as dandruff. Dandruff is the shedding of excessive amounts of skin from the scalp, a condition that can be itchy, bothersome and embarrassing.
Most cases of dandruff are a mild form of a skin condition called seborrheic dermatitis, an inflammation of the scalp and sometimes the skin of the eyebrows, eyelids, nose, ears and chest. It occurs in areas that have the greatest number of sebaceous (oil) glands and is likely caused by a combination of an overproduction of skin oil and irritation from yeast. Psoriasis, a fungal infection or simple dry skin may also trigger dandruff. Hormonal or seasonal changes often make the itching and flaking worse.
The good news is that dandruff can almost always be controlled. Most mild cases of dandruff can be managed by shampooing regularly with a gentle, over-the-counter shampoo to reduce oiliness and skin build up. Your dermatologist can help you determine the best shampoo for your specific needs. Other tips for controlling dandruff include:
- Limit hair products. Hair sprays, gels and mousses can create excess build-up on your hair and scalp, increasing its oiliness.
- Treat your scalp gently. Harsh shampoos, daily blow-drying and forceful brushing can damage your scalp and make dandruff worse.
- Avoid scratching. Although tempting, scratching at dandruff can cause further irritation.
If you don’t see an improvement after several weeks of over-the-counter treatment, or if the condition worsens, visit your dermatologist. Severe cases of dandruff may need a prescription-strength or antifungal dandruff shampoo or cream to improve the skin condition.
Don’t throw away your dark clothes yet! With a little persistence and extra care, it’s possible to get your dandruff under control.
At Comprehensive Dermatology of Idaho, our dermatologists pride themselves on staying up-to-date on the latest in skin treatments. Laser technology, a service proudly offered at our dermatology practice in Nampa, Idaho, is a versatile way to treat a multitude of skin-related issues. Learn more about the use of laser technology here:
Veins that are located close to the surface of the skin can create unsightly conditions like spider veins, varicose veins and other vascular lesions like hemangiomas and "port-wine stains." Your Nampa dermatologist will focus the laser on the affected area, and the light from it is drawn to the bright red or purple coloration. The veins collapse under the concentrated heat of the laser and, over time, are absorbed into the skin.
This particular laser service offered by your Nampa dermatologist removes unwanted body hair by weakening the hair follicles in a particular area. Many of our patients at Comprehensive Dermatology of Idaho who seek laser hair removal have excess or noticeable hair on their face, under their arms, on their stomachs or in the bikini area. Laser technology works best on dark, coarse hair, since the laser relies on the contrast between the targeted area and the surrounding skin.
Laser technology has been especially beneficial in the cosmetic dermatology arena. The controlled wavelengths of light are excellent at targeting problem areas that can't be easily covered with makeup or treated with skincare products. The laser used at your Nampa dermatologist's office can remove surface wrinkles from the face, sun damage or age spots and reddened areas on the facial skin.
If you think you have a condition that might benefit from laser services, give Comprehensive Dermatology of Idaho in Nampa, Idaho a call! We'd be happy to set you up with a consultation that could be a life-changing experience!
Is your unwanted body hair becoming more and more of a nuisance? That hair on your legs, armpits, upper lip, bikini line or chin looks unsightly and continually requires shaving or waxing. Would you like a more permanent solution?

How It Works
The in-office procedure requires no special preparation except that the patient should refrain from tanning and taking aspirin for two weeks prior to the treatment. He or she also should not wear deodorant or perfume the day of the procedure.
Dr. Owsley applies a special cooling gel to the area to be treated. The patient also wears eye protection. He delivers short bursts of concentrated light to the hair follicles. The laser destroys the pigment within the follicles, gradually removing the hair and inhibiting regrowth. The treatment works best on dark hair growing from light skin.
Nampa hair removal causes some temporary side effects such as:
These resolve within a couple of days, and patients find the hair falls out slowly but completely.
Dr. Owsley recommends 4 to 8 treatments spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart for maximum effect. Results are very accurate and reliable. As time goes on, touch-ups may be necessary.
