At Comprehensive Dermatology of Idaho, our dermatologists pride themselves on staying up-to-date on the latest in skin treatments. laser dermatologyLaser technology, a service proudly offered at our dermatology practice in Nampa, Idaho, is a versatile way to treat a multitude of skin-related issues. Learn more about the use of laser technology here:

Vascular conditions

Veins that are located close to the surface of the skin can create unsightly conditions like spider veins, varicose veins and other vascular lesions like hemangiomas and "port-wine stains." Your Nampa dermatologist will focus the laser on the affected area, and the light from it is drawn to the bright red or purple coloration. The veins collapse under the concentrated heat of the laser and, over time, are absorbed into the skin.

Hair removal

This particular laser service offered by your Nampa dermatologist removes unwanted body hair by weakening the hair follicles in a particular area. Many of our patients at Comprehensive Dermatology of Idaho who seek laser hair removal have excess or noticeable hair on their face, under their arms, on their stomachs or in the bikini area. Laser technology works best on dark, coarse hair, since the laser relies on the contrast between the targeted area and the surrounding skin.

Cosmetic issues

Laser technology has been especially beneficial in the cosmetic dermatology arena. The controlled wavelengths of light are excellent at targeting problem areas that can't be easily covered with makeup or treated with skincare products. The laser used at your Nampa dermatologist's office can remove surface wrinkles from the face, sun damage or age spots and reddened areas on the facial skin.

If you think you have a condition that might benefit from laser services, give Comprehensive Dermatology of Idaho in Nampa, Idaho a call! We'd be happy to set you up with a consultation that could be a life-changing experience!

Tags: Botox

You’ve likely heard that Botox can reverse the effects of aging and make your skin appear smoother and younger, but you may not be botoxsure exactly how it works. Below are answers to common questions the patients of Lora Callister at Comprehensive Dermatology of Idaho in Nampa, ID have about Botox to help you understand whether it's the best option.

How does Botox work?

Botox injections temporarily prevent muscle contractions in the face, smoothing out minor lines and slowing the formation of deeper wrinkles. It works by blocking neuron impulses to prevent excessive movement in the muscles while still allowing for natural-looking expressions.

Is Botox safe?

Yes, Botox has been proven safe by hundreds of peer-reviewed scientific studies. It has been approved by the FDA for cosmetic use since 2002.

Like any medical procedure, there is always a small risk of side effects. Your Nampa dermatologist will fully explain the risks and benefits during your consultation and treatment planning.

Will it work for me?

Botox is most effective on minor wrinkles caused by repeated facial expressions, such as crow’s feet and smile lines. Different treatments may be recommended for conditions such as sun damage, roughened skin or deep wrinkles.

How long before I see results?

Your results should be complete by about 2-7 days following your injection.

Is there a recovery time?

A Botox injection should not prevent you from carrying out your daily activities. You may be advised to temporarily avoid certain activities such as rubbing the area, taking blood-thinning medications or exercising.

How long does Botox last?

Botox is designed to be a temporary treatment. For most people, the effects will last somewhere between 3 and 6 months. You may see longer-lasting results once you've continued your injections on a regular basis.

Will I still be able to make facial expressions?

Yes, a proper application of Botox will still allow you to make natural facial expressions. Be sure to consult with an experienced Botox provider to ensure that they understand how to use the right techniques for your needs.

What skin problems will this treatment address?

After these injections, you may experience some redness, bruising, pain and tenderness in the areas where you received Perlane®. Side effects are typically mild and usually go away in a week.

How long will my results last?

On average, your results should last about six months. You can also continue getting subsequent treatments to maintain your more youthful appearance.

Patients who have bleeding disorders, as well as those who have severe allergies to certain medications that have required hospitalized care should not get Perlane®. Talk to us to find out if you are healthy enough for this cosmetic treatment.

Is your unwanted body hair becoming more and more of a nuisance? That hair on your legs, armpits, upper lip, bikini line or chin looks unsightly and continually requires shaving or waxing. Would you like a more permanent solution?

Comprehensive Dermatology of Idaho PLLC offers a range of dermatological care for patients of all ages. Whether it's a medical need, hair removal such as treatment of skin cancer or psoriasis, or a cosmetic issue such as wrinkle reduction, Ryan S. Owsley MD FAAD FASDS and Thad W. Wilkey PA-C professionally and compassionately work with you to achieve your best skin possible.

Comfortable, accurate and lasting laser hair removal is one of their most popular services. In fact, according to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery says that wrinkle reduction treatments are the only dermatology service to outnumber laser hair removal procedures in the United States today.

How It Works

The in-office procedure requires no special preparation except that the patient should refrain from tanning and taking aspirin for two weeks prior to the treatment. He or she also should not wear deodorant or perfume the day of the procedure.

Dr. Owsley applies a special cooling gel to the area to be treated. The patient also wears eye protection. He delivers short bursts of concentrated light to the hair follicles. The laser destroys the pigment within the follicles, gradually removing the hair and inhibiting regrowth. The treatment works best on dark hair growing from light skin.

After Care

Nampa hair removal causes some temporary side effects such as:

  • redness
  • swelling
  • discomfort

These resolve within a couple of days, and patients find the hair falls out slowly but completely.

Dr. Owsley recommends 4 to 8 treatments spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart for maximum effect. Results are very accurate and reliable. As time goes on, touch-ups may be necessary.

Laser Hair RemovalFall is a perfect time to undergo laser hair removal. Individuals having this state of the art treatment usually require 4 to 8 sessions with a board-certified dermatologist such as Ryan S. Owsley of Comprehensive Dermatology of Idaho. This schedule accommodates the natural growth cycle of body hair and helps ensure complete removal of unwanted hair on the:

  • chin
  • upper lip
  • bikini line
  • legs
  • armpits

Why Laser Hair Removal

Focused laser light precisely targets individual hair follicles, interrupting their ability to grow. Typical human hair has a growth cycle in which some of it is actively growing, some of it is preparing to grow and some of it is dormant. As such, laser hair removal treatments are done in stages--4 to 8 of them, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. This way, all hair is targeted.

It is not unusual, however, for patients to return to their Nampa hair removal specialist for "touch-ups." Ninety percent of individuals receiving treatment experience permanent hair loss.

The Procedure

Laser hair removal is an in-office procedure needing no special preparation or anesthetic. The tiny laser "blasts" generate adequate heat to inhibit hair growth, but not enough to cause patients serious discomfort during the 30 to 40-minute session. People describe the treatment as being like a rubber band being snapped on the skin.

Afterward, the treated skin may appear a bit bumpy and red, but cold compresses and moisturizing cream alleviates the minor discomfort. Patients are encouraged to avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours after laser hair removal because heavy sweating irritates the skin.

Laser Hair Removal in the Fall

Dr. Owsley, and his associate Thad W. Wilkey, PA-C, say that fall is an ideal time to undergo laser treatment as the weather is cool, and there is adequate time to accommodate the growth cycle of body hair. By the time the spring arrives, patients have the hair-free skin they've always wanted.

Who Can Get Laser Hair Removal in Nampa

Many healthy people make good laser hair removal candidates. However, the Columbia University Medical Center Department of Dermatology states that the best candidates are light-skinned people with dark hair because the dark pigment absorbs more laser light. Therefore, treatment is more effective.
